If you are unsure exactly how the mother of the bride (MOB) and the mother of the groom (MOG) should select their wedding attire, you may want to follow the traditional rules. Traditionally, the mother of the bride will purchase her dress first, which will then guide the mother of the groom. The MOB’s color, cut and length will help the MOG choose a style and color that complements, rather than matching or clashing, the dress of the MOB.
Although this is the traditional methodology, the mothers do not absolutely need to follow these rules because they are sometimes considered old fashioned and unrealistic. There will always be that mother of the bride who shops at the last minute or the mother of the groom who snatched her perfect dress already when it was on sale. Then there are uncooperative families that do not communicate or work together or any of a multitude of factors that could inhibit this and other traditions. What is important is that both parties are flexible and realize it is not a competition, just play it by ear and everything will work out.
