If you are leaning towards having a DJ at your wedding reception instead of a band, there is no reason to be afraid. Although DJs may connect with disco fever and flashing lights in some people’s minds, the disc jockeys of today are now artists themselves rather than just players of music. They can mix and balance different musical styles for different age groups while also playing the songs as you remember them so you can sing along.
Some of the pros of DJs are that they take up less dance floor space than a band and can be easily moved if necessary. They are also generally less expensive than a band (although some of the celebrity DJs can be as expensive as bands) and can throw on a disc during a break so there is always music. Also, if a DJ has a great stage presence and excellent emcee skills, they can maintain the party and really set the mood.
However, you could always end up with the DJ who has a less than glowing personality and he ends up killing the party. Ideally, you should see the DJ in action before you commit to gauge their personality, dress and the way they work with the crowd so you get someone who will do a good job. If this is not possible, ask for a playlist to see what kind of music they play and if the songs you love are on the list to see if the DJ will mesh with your wedding style.
